School attendance is compulsory and parents/carers can register their child for any basic school if there are places at the school they chose.  The city has defined local catchment areas so that parents/carers knew what school their child should attend. It is possible for parents/carers to choose basic school outside their local catchment area for their child according the education frames or school specialization on languages, maths, sport or ecology. Parents/carers can choose school for their child according the school´s credit, teaching approach, or their own experience. Opening days held every year by schools for parents/carers and their children can help to decide.  Last year one thousand children were registered, which was the largest number in the last ten years. “According to statistics we expect about 800 children to be registered for the school year 2012/2013,” said Alena Synková, head of the School and Children and Youth Leisure Activities Department.

“We are looking forward to new pupils and we wish they like school and do well at school. The city creates good conditions for classes, maintains and upgrades schools. We will be changing large number of windows to insulate schools thermally and building new sports grounds,” added Anna Maclová, deputy mayor in charge of schools. Last year 443 boys and 402 girls started school. From the total of 845 first-year pupils there were 155 living out of the city. Last year parents/carers of 147 children applied for delay of their child's entry to primary school and similar number is expected this year.
