The city of Hradec Králové is a significant university center with six faculties of three universities. The city is characterized by its outstanding tradition of medical studies. In 1945, the Faculty of Medicine of Charles University was established, and the Faculty of Military Medical Service of the University of Defense and the Pharmaceutical Faculty of Charles University are located here, too. Approximately 7, 000 students attend the University of Hradec Králové, which nowadays consists of three faculties– the Pedagogic Faculty, the Faculty of Information Technology and management, and the Faculty of Humanistic Studies. Hradec Králové is among the leading towns in the Czech Republic as far as the number of students is concerned. The presence of colleges and universities in the city creates good conditions for research institute development. The Institute of Experimental Bio-pharmaceutics is the only institution of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in the Region of Hradec Králové. The Institution of Glass Research in Hradec Králové performs the role of certified testing laboratory and certification institution. As a branch of the Czech Hydro-meteorological Institute, the Solar and Ozone Observatory also operates in Hradec Králové. Also, the Health Institute and State Veterinary Institute have their centers in the city.
